Policies and Practices of SHEA Research Network Hospitals During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Dr. Deverick Anderson worked with a team from several other faclities to review the policies and practices of SHEA research network hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic for an article published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) surveyed the SHEA Research Network (SRN) in April about some of these most challenging aspects of the pandemic. The findings show the “what,” but not the “why.” For example, the reasoning behind individual facilities’ decisions about precisely what PPE HCP should wear in specific circumstances may have been based on PPE stewardship, shortages, state and local laws, or other reasons. The results of the survey provide a ‘point-in-time’ snapshot of a rapidly changing landscape and give the reader insight into how hospital epidemiologists from SRN member institutions made swift adjustments during this crisis to help ensure patient and healthcare worker safety during the pandemic.
